Contrast is a prominent theme in my work, creating a dichotomy between rough and smooth, dry and wet, dark and light. My intention is not to copy nature but to expand the possibilities of the natural form with the use of glaze and texture. Using variation of color and surface, my work is not a literal representation. It is continuously developing through experimentation and chance.

Our conscience is secluded, like a boat at sea. We can navigate the thoughts that inhabit this space; yet being in control is like steering a boat adrift. Layers of experience, memories, personality, time; these components all influence the balance of a unique existence.

By incorporating the female form, voluptuous and unembellished, I intend to invoke the nurturing self. Embracing the beauty of volume and the seductive nature of the feminine poise, these women are an interpretation of my psychological self. I am interested in the acceptance of excess and the complexity of indulgence.

The Hawaiian culture has influenced my lifestyle and artwork in many ways and I admire its traditional practices and the customs of that time. This is an exploration of my experience living on the Big Island of Hawaii when I was a younger. Observing traditional and contemporary aesthetics, exploring the role as a non-native, and embracing the uniqueness of the Hawaiian culture are all important perspectives that I continue to illustrate in my work. Many of my new works contain the woven material of the Lauhala tree (Pandanus tectorius). Lauhala is a conventional plant in the Hawaiian culture and has been a vital material in the household and daily life since the beginning. Purses can embody a personality, a mirror of ones self, an object of security. Weaving the purse out of lauhala is a personal reference to the traditional use in a modern world, while pairing it with objects that are relevant to my experience and realizations. Through my own transformations I continue to confront the need for a place to reside, an insurance of home. The incorporation of birds represent the rudimentary idea that home is where the heart is, and that ones nesting can be fleeting and seasonal.
